The attendance at official fan zones in host cities reaching around five million people has become another Euro-2012 achievement. Therefore, fan zones in the two host countries have broken the record of the previous 2008 tournament held in Austria and Switzerland which hosted 4.2 million people in fan zones, the tournament director, Markiyan Lubkivskyi, has announced at a press conference in Kyiv.
“The total number of the visitors of fan zones at the 2012 European Football Championship is almost five million. It has substantially surpassed the result of the tournament held four years ago in Austria and Switzerland,” Lubkivskyi emphasized. “All this is three matches before the end of the tournament,” he added.
Meanwhile, the head of the Local Organizing Committee has emphasized that Ukrainian fan zones are the leaders in attendance rating. The fan zone in Kyiv holds first position in terms of density of Euro-2012 guests. The total number of people to have visited the fan zones in Khreshchatyk Street and Maydan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) during all tournament days is 1.2 million, Lubkivskyi emphasized.
According to the tournament director, the most important point is that not a single incident or conflict related to confrontation between fans was registered during the whole period of operation of the fan zones.
